Police confirm correction in Jefferson City homicide information

UPDATE, Jan. 2, 2017 12:00 p.m.: Jefferson City Police say the spelling of homicide suspect Jeffery Millens’ first name was incorrect when the original information was released to the public.

Millens’ first name was spelled “Jeffrey” in the release when they say it is actually spelled “Jeffery.”

According to a staff member at the department, the name was inconsistently spelled in multiple documents and that it’s unclear where or when the mix-up occurred.

The department confirmed the corrected spelling to ABC 17 News and that spelling was updated throughout this article.

UPDATE, 5:22 p.m.: Jefferson City police have arrested 22-year-old Jeffery Millens in connection with an overnight homicide.

Police said 23-year-old Quonterio Davis was shot multiple times before dying at a local hospital.

When detectives arrived at the shooting, they were able to identify Millens as a suspect. He had apparently fled before police arrived.

Police said Davis and Millens knew each other but the extent of that relationship as well as a motive are still unknown.

Police received information that Millens was in the area of Hawthorn Parkway and Linden. They were able to find him there and take him into custody.

Based on evidence at the scene and from a variety of sources, detectives arrested Millens for second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

He is in the Cole County Jail awaiting formal charges.

ORIGINAL STORY: Jefferson City police say they are investigating a homicide that happened early Sunday morning, on New Year’s Day.

It happened in the 900 block of East Capitol Avenue where police responded to a shooting around 1 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The suspect fled before police arrived, but with the help of detectives, Jefferson City Patrol and Community Action Team members, the suspect was found and taken into custody less than two hours after the shooting.

Right now, detectives are processing the crime scene and interviewing the suspect. Police say no information on the suspect or victim will be released at this time.
