Extra patrol ahead of New Year’s Eve and updated drunk driving punishments

A Columbia man could be facing charges of murder and assault after police said he was involved in a crash that killed another man.

According to police, Joshua Keller was driving when he and Sebastian Sneed collided head-on on Business Loop 70 East near Eastland Circle. Sneed died on the scene. A child in Sneed’s car was able to crawl out and had moderate injuries.

Police are still investigating exactly how the crash happened and have not released if they believe Keller was drinking when it happened. Public records show Keller is on probation for a previous D.W.I. charge. He also pleaded guilty in June to driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Law enforcement is increasing patrol for the holiday weekend, hoping to cut down on crashes.

Missouri State Highway Patrol will have extra troopers on the roads and will also set up D.U.I. checkpoints.

Drinking and driving is never advised, but if a driver is caught after midnight, they may be facing harsher punishments. Revisions to Missouri’s criminal code goes into effect Jan. 1 that will impact convicted drunk drivers.

Drunk drivers who kill someone while drunk behind the wheel can face up to 10 years in prison. Another part of the revision will require habitual D.U.I offenders to complete at least 85 percent of their sentence.
