Standoff ends at Foyer Court off of Slope Street

UPDATE, 12/28 9:20 a.m: Police tell our crews they initially were dispatched to the 2000 block of Garnet Avenue on a welfare check.

Officers were unable to locate him at his residence, but did locate his vehicle on Parker and Weatherwood. After the standoff on Foyers Court, the man was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Police will not be releasing his name at this time.

UPDATE, 6:25 p.m.: The standoff on Foyer Court is over after the man was handcuffed by police and driven away in a Columbia police car at about 5:45 p.m.

The man eventually moved away from the truck he was standing by and then police were able to put him in handcuffs.

Shawn Winfield, one witness on scene, said he saw the man moving after officers told him to stand still and he had his hand in his pocket. Winfield said he was relieved that law enforcement did not use lethal force.

Winfield also mentioned law enforcement thought the man had hostages in his truck, but it turned out he was alone.

Police did a quick search of the truck but it was not towed away. They left shortly after that.

At about the same time, police were searching a home on Garnet Drive. ABC17 News crews said no one was home and police talked to neighbors about the home.

Garnet Drive is about a half-mile from Foyer Court. ABC17 News is working to find out if the incidents are related.
