Police are looking for person who stole a car in north east Columbia

UPDATE 7:20 a.m: Officers have found the stolen vehicle off of Valley Creek Drive. Police tell our crews, as one officer was patrolling the area he saw the car door swing open and a man start running.

Police brought in the Boone County Sheriffs’ K-9 unit to help look for the suspect. They searched around houses in the area.

While looking, the K-9 unit found a gun on the same path as the suspect.

As of 6:55 a.m police called off the search after the K-9 unit lost the trail.

Officers will continue to patrol the area.

ORIGINAL STORY: Columbia Police are looking for a person who stole a car at The Greens at Columbia apartment complex around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

An ABC17 News crew on the scene just off Clark Lane saw a number of officers working the incident. Initial information indicates the owner of the car was warming the vehicle up when it was taken and was not in or near the car.

Officers told ABC17 News the person who stole the car abandoned it not far from where it was taken and ran away.

That person remains on the run. ABC17 News will continue to update this incident as we get new information.
