Woman dies in crash near Midway

UPDATE 11:10 p.m.: Mary Payne, 50, of Fulton was identified as the driver killed in Monday’s crash.

UPDATE 11:32 a.m.: ABC 17 News has confirmed that it was a single vehicle accident. A middle-aged woman was traveling westbound on I-70, when she left the right side of the roadway. According to witnesses, she over-corrected and lost control. She flipped her vehicle and ended up in the median of the roadway.

The westbound lanes of I-70 have been opened, and the eastbound lanes will be restricted to one lane for the next few minutes.

ABC 17 News looked into the number of crashes in Boone County resulting from drivers over-correcting themselves. Since January 2016, there have been 62 crashes and only one of those were fatal.

According to Lieutenant Paul Reinsch of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, drivers over-correcting themselves is a problem. He said people need to slow down, not break and ease back onto the highway if they veer off.

The Missouri Highway Patrol will not confirm until the investigation is over whether the driver over-corrected herself in the crash Monday morning.

The woman’s name will not be released until the investigation is over and the next of kin has been notified.
