Two City Council positions open in two different cities

A Jefferson City Council member resigned during Monday night’s meeting. Earlier on Monday, the Sturgeon City Council’s finance officer emailed his letter of resignation.

Sturgeon’s City Council hired William Dellinger on Sept. 1. The previous finance officer held his position for nine years before resigning.

Sturgeon Mayor Gene Kelly said the previous finance officer was two months behind on the city’s financial statements, which might have made Dellinger’s job more stressful. But in Dellinger’s resignation letter, he said he had other commitments.

Before the city hired Dellinger, there were eleven other applicants for the finance officer position, according to Kelly. He said it shouldn’t be too hard to fill the position again because the city will look to those other applicants.

The finance officer position is not elected and is not a city employee. It is a contracted position.

Richard Sheets, the deputy director of the Missouri Municipal League, said Sturgeon’s City Council needs to choose a finance officer who can deal with politics and public finance.

The Jefferson City Council now has two positions open for the next election, which is in March. Mayor Carrie Tergin said she expects plenty of people to apply for the open positions because there won’t be an incumbent to run against.

Tergin said she wants people who love Jefferson City and want to make it better to apply for the positions. She said the qualifications to run are on the city clerk’s website.
