MoDOT warning drivers of possible heavy traffic Sunday

The Missouri Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to allow for extra travel time on Sunday as they return home from their Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

MoDOT said traffic is likely to increase dramatically on I-70, especially between Columbia and Wentzville. Peak travel times are from 3-9 p.m.

“Last year the average speed on I-70 the Sunday after Thanksgiving dropped to around 35 mph during peak travel times in some areas, a drastic reduction from the 70 mph speed limit folks are used to driving,” said David Silvester, district engineer for MoDOT’s Central District.

He said some of the traffic was from college students traveling back to school after Thanksgiving break.

Depending on your destination, MoDOT is suggesting Route 50 as an alternative route to I-70.
