Weekend delays expected on Missouri River bridge in Jefferson City

Mid-Missouri drivers could find delays over the weekend on the Highway 54/63 Missouri River bridge in Jefferson City as the westbound bridge opens to traffic.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said the eastbound bridge has been reduced down to one lane in each direction. The reduction will allow work crews to remove a concrete barrier that separates the lanes, remove temporary striping and place new pavement markings.

Eastbound Highway 54/63 is expected to be reduced down to one lane until Saturday morning. The eastbound bridge has carried two lanes of traffic in each direction since May 1 when the westbound bridge closed for painting and repairs.

“We know this is a busy weekend with the Missouri Tigers football game in Columbia on Saturday and the beginning of deer season, among other activities. We ask for drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time for their travels, drive the speed limit and stay focused,” said David Silvester, district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District.

Both the eastbound and westbound Highway 54/63 bridges are expected to open to traffic Monday at 6 a.m.

The access ramp from West Main Street to Highway 54/63 and the on-ramp from McCarty Street to Highway 54/63 is also expected open.

According to MODoT, drivers may find single-lane closures after Nov. 14 on the westbound bridge during non-peak hours.

Silvester said, “We are as happy as the next person to reach this point, and we once again want to thank everyone for their support and patience as we deliver this important project. Repainting and repairing the westbound bridge will ensure it remains in good shape for several more decades.”

There are currently no plans to close the eastbound bridge for repainting.
