Jefferson City apartment fire displaces multiple families

Multiple people were left without homes after an apartment fire in Jefferson City Thursday.

It happened around 10:20 a.m. in the 900 block of East High Street.

According to the Jefferson City Fire Department, crews arrived to see flames showing from the first floor of the large two-story building.

Everyone was safely evacuated and the American Red Cross is assisting 12 people and multiple animals displaced by the fire.

Right now, the cause is unknown, but fire officials are reminding people to make sure they have working smoke detectors and an escape plan in case of a fire.
