Small fire at Lange Middle School, students evacuated safely

Students were evacuated for a short period of time from Lange Middle School after a small fire.

ABC 17 News spoke with officials on scene who said it started in an electrical room on a breaker. A division chief said a maintenance worker spotted the fire that was contained to a breaker, pulled the fire alarm and called 911.

The division chief said the school’s evacuation plan worked as it should have and all 621 students were outside for about 15 minutes.

The division chief said at no time were the students in any danger.

The original call had five trucks, two medics, and two supervisors responding. However, when the first unit arrived and determined it was a small fire, the rest were called back. The division chief said they treat all situations like this like a “big event until determined otherwise.”

The school day is proceeding as normal, and no one was injured.

The fire marshal is involved in the investigation to find out what sparked the fire and will let the school know so they can make necessary changes.
