Road work deadline extended for Clark Avenue bridge in Jefferson City

Missouri Department of Transportation officials announced Thursday that the Clark Avenue Bridge over Route 50/63 would be closed for longer than anticipated due to unexpected additional repairs.

The bridge closed on Sept. 19, but MODOT said the additional work will keep the overpass closed until early to mid-December.

Officials said crews have discovered that the concrete on the bridge is more deteriorated than expected. The bridge is 56 years old.

Starting Friday, Route 50/63 near the Clark Avenue Bridge will be down to one lane in each direction so that crews can take out a part of the bridge’s deck. Traffic will be routed up and over the Clark Avenue on and off ramps. MODOT said rerouting traffic is scheduled to be complete by Monday, Oct. 24 at 6 a.m.

MODOT said drivers should be ready for daily lane closures in the area as the work on the bridge continues, but said that crews will keep both lanes open during peak travel times. During the weekdays, both westbound lanes on Route 50/63 will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and both eastbound lanes will be open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On July 29, MODOT announced that the westbound Missouri River Bridge would also need more repairs than initially anticipated. The bridge, which has been closed since May 1, was originally scheduled to open at the end of August. It’s now set to open on November 14.
