UPDATE: Driver identified in fatal Columbia motorcycle crash

The Columbia Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened at West Worley Street and Strawn Road Saturday evening.

Police have identified the driver as Edward Rantz, 56, of Columbia.

Police said Rantz was driving northbound on Strawn Rd. when he drove off the road, crashed into a ditch and was thrown from his motorcycle. Rantz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer said it’s unclear what caused him to drive off the road. Right now, the use of alcohol or drugs is under investigation.

According to the crash report, Rantz was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Strawn Road from West Worley to Payson was closed while police investigated and worked to clear the scene.
