Local emergency crews help people stranded by Hurricane Matthew

Missouri Task Force 1 has arrived at a staging area in Nakina, North Carolina Tuesday night to help people affected by Hurricane Matthew.

The aid group has setup in a church parking lot and is waiting another assignment.

Task Force 1 was in Lumberton and Whiteville, North Carolina on Monday.

Members checked over 170 addresses in Lumberton and evacuated 10 people by boat.

Emergency workers also helped six people who remained sheltered in place.

At least 1,500 people in the Lumberton-area had been stranded by floodwaters.

Missouri Task Force 1 left the Boone County Fire Protection District Thursday night.

After leaving Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah, Ga., they reached Fort Bragg, NC by Monday afternoon.

The group immediately set up six boat crews, rescuing people from rising floodwaters.

Task Forces 1 is working with other groups from Ohio, New Jersey and New York.

The highly-trained team is based in Columbia and responds to disaster like 9/11 or Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
