Hand, foot & mouth disease in local schools
One mid-Missouri school district is dealing with cases of hand, foot and mouth disease.
ABC 17 spoke with Southern Boone school district superintendent Chris Felmlee who said 6 to 7 cases have been reported in the district. He said the disease is mostly affecting the middle and high schools.
Hand, foot and mouth disease leaves a rash on the hands and feet, sores in the mouth and causes a fever.
Felmlee said the schools are taking extra precautions to keep the buildings disinfected, and had this warning for parents, “This is the time of season where kids start coming down with colds and flus, please don’t send students into school when they have a fever of 100 or higher.”
He said at this point, they are not considering closing any schools, rather just being diligent about cleanliness.
A note was sent out to parents at the district about the cases. Felmlee said some of the kids have come back to school. He also said if they no longer have a fever and cover up the rash, they are allowed to be around other students.
ABC 17 News also spoke to Dr. Tara Flynn from Mizzou Quick Cares and Urgent Care who said hand, foot and mouth is going around the region right now. She said she has mostly seen the disease in elementary-aged kids and teenagers.
