September on track to be one of the warmest on record

Only 3 more days remain until the end of September and no doubt Columbia has been on the warm side. During these remaining days, the temperature could have an impact on where September stands as far as record warmth.

As of September 26th, the average temperature in Columbia has been 73.8 degrees, which ties Columbia for the 6th warmest September on record. This is only 2 degrees cooler than the warmest September ever recorded since modern record keeping began back in 1890.

Thankfully we are finally seeing a cool down in mid-Missouri, just in time for the first full week of fall. Will it last though is the question? The latest outlook for the first few weeks of October shows a ridge building into the Midwest and keeping temperatures slightly above average. According to the Climate Prediciton Center, a trough/ridge pattern will set up across the continental U.S., with Missouri seeing the above average temperatures through at least the first half of October and temperatures seeing a downward swing by the end of the month.

To put things in perspective, the average high for October is 57.4 degrees, 20 degrees colder than our average high just this month.
