Fifteen drivers arrested during DWI checkpoints in Columbia

Columbia police arrested a total of fifteen drivers over a 24-hour period during two sobriety checkpoints on August 12 and 13.

The first checkpoint started at 10 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight, and focused on the area of Locust Street at Fourth Avenue. Officers stopped 94 drivers, arresting five for driving drunk, one for driving while on drugs, and one for driving while suspended.

The second checkpoint ran from 12:45 a.m. Saturday to around 2:30 a.m., and focused on University Avenue at Matthews Street. Officers stopped 81 drivers, arresting six for driving drunk, one for driving while on drugs, and one for possession of marijuana.
