Man dies after jumping into I-70 traffic

A Columbia man died after jumping into traffic on I-70 Tuesday night.

Columbia Police were called to check on the 37-year-old man around 10:36 p.m. after a caller reported seeing him lean on the guardrail over the Providence Road bridge that runs across I-70.

Police started to contact the man when he jumped off the bridge into westbound I-70. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway was closed to westbound traffic between Rangeline Street and West Boulevard for three hours while crews worked the scene.

The man’s family has been notified.
