Road buckle shuts down neighborhood street in southwest Columbia
UPDATE 7/26:Crews are expected to start repairing the road buckle on Tuesday. The repairs are set to last until August 3rd. The section of the road is completely blocked off.
Crews have shut down Red Bay Creek Road in the Mill Creek Manor subdivision after a road buckle formed Saturday afternoon.
Residents in the southwest Columbia neighborhood tell ABC 17 News the buckle happened around 4:30 p.m. One resident said he actually heard the road cracking from inside his house, saying, “It felt like an earthquake.”
Some residents in the area weren’t concerned, but some say they were concerned because the buckle happened near a gas line. Compared to Saturday, the road buckle has gotten worse, according to one resident.
According to public works departments, road buckles occur when it’s very hot outside and there’s a lot of moisture in the area. Moisture seeps through cracks in the pavement, causing pressure to release, similar to that of an earthquake.
Boone County Joint Communications says Red Bay Creek Road is owned by the City of Columbia, therefore either Columbia Public Works or Boone County Public Works is responsible for repairing the road. There is no set date as of now to repair the road, since offices were closed this weekend.
Columbia Public Works ask you to call them to report a road buckle. To report a buckle on the weekend, you can call the Boone County Joint Communications number at 573-442-6131.
