Cooling centers open for those who need to beat the heat
Cooling centers all around Columbia and Jefferson City have opened for anyone who wants to relax and avoid the sun.
The ARC has been a cooling center for years, open during their business hours, 7 days a week.
University doctors warn those who have to be outside to drink lots of water and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Doctors say to pay close attention to the elderly and young children, as they are the most at risk for getting heat related illnesses.
They also say to know the difference between heat exhaustion and a heat stroke.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion are:
-dizziness
-excessive sweating
-headache
Symptoms of a heat stroke are:
-throbbing headache
-rapid pulse
-vomiting
-no sweating
When experiencing symptoms of a heat stroke call 911 immediately.
