Ameren workers fix gas leak in Columbia

Firefighters and workers from Ameren UE were on the scene of a gas leak in Columbia Wednesday morning.

Dispatchers got word about a gas odor on Rose Drive shortly before 10 a.m.

Columbia Water and Light said crews hit a gas main while trying to fix a routine water service leak. Ameren worked to fix the problem.

It was unclear if any homes lost utility service because of the disruption.

There have been several possible leaks this month. Last week, crews were called to Broadway for a potential leak, and the week before that, crews responded for a leak near the new Shakespeare’s location downtown.

ABC 17 News spoke with Tom Ratermann, General Manager of the Boone County Regional Sewer District, who said hitting a line can happen to anyone.

“Anybody in the utility business, your day could come when you hit something too,” said Ratermann. “Some days you get hit and some days you do the hitting. So I really don’t want to point fingers at anybody. It’s just part of the business.”
