Holiday travel on the Missouri River bridge: is it affecting response times?

Construction work on the Missouri River bridge in Jefferson City, combined with a higher number of drivers on Memorial Day, is causing traffic to move very slowly through the capital city.

We’ve gotten reports of traffic moving at a crawl or even stopped along parts of Highway 54. If you are driving through the area, please use caution and be aware of potentially slow or stopped traffic ahead of you.

Jefferson City Fire Department told ABC 17 that traffic on the Missouri River bridge at times can cause a delay in response times. So far this holiday weekend, response times have been normal.

In times where traffic is delayed they have a working relationship with fire departments in the area to assist in responding to calls. Holts Summit Fire Department is one of the departments to assist.

The Jefferson City Fire Department wants to remind drivers if they see a emergency vehicle to always pull over to the right when it’s safe.
