State Senate overrides Gov. Nixon’s school funds veto

Missouri senators have voted to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a proposal reining in the amount of money lawmakers provide to K-12 schools. Hours after he vetoed the bill Wednesday, senators voted 25-7 to override him. Two-thirds of House members also must vote to override the governor.

The governor claims aid for K-12 schools next fiscal year falls more than $400 million short of the set goals. Funding for years has often fallen short of those targets.

Supporters say a cap will make it more feasible to meet target funding, but Nixon says it breaks a promise made to students.

The lead House member pushing the bill says he has no doubt lawmakers will attempt an override. It passed with enough support to override.
