Man shot and killed in north Columbia identified, no arrests made

UPDATE: Police have now identified the man shot and killed in north Columbia Monday.

Police said 24-year-oldGabrielle Rhodes, of Columbia, was killed in the shooting in the 1500 block of Sylvan Lane.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of Sylvan Lane at 7:43 p.m. after getting multiple calls of shots fired. Upon officers’ arrival, they located an adult male, identified as Rhodes, with an apparent gunshot wound. Rhodes was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The Columbia Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Forensic Evidence Team, Street Crimes Unit, and Crime Scene Investigator were called in to investigate the homicide. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is on-going.

ORIGINAL STORY: Several police officers responded to a deadly shooting in northeast Columbia Monday night. Officers went to Sylvan Lane near Paris Road and Clark Lane around 7:45 p.m.

Witnesses said they heard between 10 to 15 shots near the Deerfield Apartments on the 1500 block of Sylvan Lane. Police had the rear of one building taped off, while officers searched a nearby building. Monday’s death marked the first shooting homicide in Columbia of this year.

Columbia Police Public Information Officer, Bryana Larimer, said an adult man was killed. As of Monday night, officers are working to notify the victim’s family.

Larimer said at least 34 officers responded to the scene at one point, including crime scene investigators and forensic analysts. Larimer said they may not be able to release the man’s name until Tuesday morning.
