House committee delays vote on SJR 39

The Emerging Issues House Committee postponed votingon a controversial religious freedom bill Wednesday evening.

Rep. Elijah J. L. Haahr announced the committee would delay the vote until next week to give members more time to sift through the information.

Last Tuesday , lawmakers heard more than 4 hours of testimony from those who support and oppose Senate Joint Resolution 39.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bob Onder, would essentially protect certain religious organizations from lawsuits if employees refuse to provide services to same sex couples.

Opponents believe it would hurt the state’s economy. Other opponents believe it’s discriminating against the LGBT community.

Supporters of the bill say it should be left up to Missouri voters to decide on the issue.
