Man hit by 2 vehicles while walking on I-70 identified

Columbia police identified the man who was hospitalized Thursday morning after he was hit by three vehicles on Interstate 70, including one car and one truck.

Police said 24-year-oldDewayne Carter was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he tried to walk across I-70 eastbound this morning.

Police said a vehicle struck Carter. Another vehicle then hit him while he was laying in the roadway.

Police originally told us there were three vehicles involved, and the third car had driven off. However, the CPD Traffic Unit located the vehicle and driver of the car that allegedly left the scene of the accident. The investigation revealed the driver and the vehicle were not involved in the accident.

Crews temporarily shutdown a lane on eastbound I-70 near the Columbia mall while investigating the crash.

At least four units responded around 2:43 a.m. by the Stadium exit.Officers were investigating the median area on I-70 just west of the Stadium Boulevard exit where the incident happened.

They took Carter toUniversity Hospital for serious, but not life threatening injuries.

CPD officers said two vehicles involved stopped after the crash and said neither were taken into custody.
