One dead, two injured in Columbia crash
Emergency crews responded to a deadly two-car crash in north Columbia Wednesday.
It happened around 2:20 p.m. on Paris Road just south of Waco Road.
The Columbia Fire Department said 68-year-old Genie Drown was killed in the wreck and two other adults were sent to the hospital with serious injuries.
The second driver and passenger are both listed in fair condition as of Thursday afternoon.
Police blocked off the northbound lanes of Paris Road for more than two hours as crews investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage.
Columbia police on scene told ABC 17 News it was a T-bone wreck, but did not have details on how it happened.
Officials cleared the scene and reopened all lanes of Paris Road around 4:40 p.m.
This was the second deadly crash at that location in the past year.
On March 21, 2015, a 24-year-old man was killed in a two-car wreck near the intersection of Paris and Waco roads.
Police on scene said it happened when a semi truck was pulling into the driveway of the 3M plant. A car slammed into the back of the semi without slowing down.
Nicole Weddington was later charged with involuntary manslaughter for reportedly driving under the influence of cocaine and marijuana for the March crash.
The speed limit increases to 55 mph about a mile from where the two wrecks happened. But some Columbia drivers told ABC 17 News they did not think the speed limit was the problem.
“If you change the speed limit to something slower, you’ll just have a lot of people breaking the law,” Columbia Driver Mike Maag said. “People need to look both ways and be more careful.”
