Fake priest out of jail after allegedly scamming elderly woman

ABC 17 News has confirmed a man claiming to be a priest while allegedly scamming an elderlywoman is out of jail.

Ryan Gevelinger was picked up for a warrant after pleading guilty to an unlawful possession of a weapon charge last December. Howard County Prosecutor Stephen Murrell dropped three counts of financial exploitation of an elderly person around the same time.

Gevelinger was sentenced to 5 years probation, but afterwards failed to show up for court.

The jail told ABC 17 he was released Wednesday after paying his medical costs.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office believed Gevelinger convinced a woman living with him to pay $30,000 for a monastery in Armstrong, a small town northwest of Fayette.
