Local leaders pass resolution in support of MU

City and county leaders said they’re concerned with state lawmakers talking of University of Missouri budget cuts. Boone County Commissioners pass a resolution asking legislators to consider the negative impact of funding cuts.

‘What may happen if the Legislature cuts the support to the university, as has been suggested, is a real economic impact here in Columbia, Boone County and the central part the state,” said Boone County Commissioner Dan Atwill.

The resolution states mid-Missouri is “inextricably tied to the continued viability and success of the university” and cutting funding would negatively affect the economy.

The resolution was written in conjunction with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Public Schools and the City of Columbia — council members passed the resolution at Monday’s meeting.

“I fully support the University of Missouri and ask our state Legislatures to please stay out of the fray and please focus on the things that are important to our state,” said Laura Nauser, Fifth Ward City Council member.

The resolution passed doesn’t force the Legislature to take, or not take, action. It’s an official statement of support of MU.
