Bill would prohibit grand jury proceedings in officer-related shooting deaths

A Missouri lawmaker has filed legislation that would make an appellate court to be responsible for cases involving law enforcement-related shooting deaths.

Representative Brandon Ellington wants the appellate court to determine if there is enough evidence for an indictment.

Ellington referred back to the cases of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice, which saw grand juries decide there was not enough evidence for the officers to be charged.

Ellington said he filed the bill to restore faith in the justice system and “ensure fair, unbiased proceedings.”
