Columbia road crews ready for winter weather

Several counties across Mid-Missouri may see freezing rain through Saturday morning, including Chariton, Saline, Macon and Pettis.

As the temperatures begin to drop, public works crews are preparing for the upcoming winter weather.

Although the freezing rain isn’t expected to make it’s way through Boone County, Columbia Public Works spokesperson Steve Sapp said they’re constantly monitoring weather conditions.

In preparation for winter weather, Sapp said an inspection was preformed on their more than 30 snow plows. The department also has 5,000 tons of road salt ready to go for the season.

Sapp said they used a little more than 3,000 tons last year in Columbia.

Columbia Public Works wants to remind residents about priority snow routes throughout the city. These are designated streets usually near hospitals and schools. When there’s two or more inches of snow on the ground, all cars must be moved off the streets to allow crews to plow.

Residents who live along these priority routes can sign up for alerts to let them know when crews are plowing the streets. Sign up here.

Failure to move your car while crews are plowing results in a $100 fine plus towing charges.
