Isolated severe storms possible Thursday

A strong cold front is forecast to move into the Plains and eventually into Mid-Missouri by Thursday, bringing the threat for showers and possibly a few strong thunderstorms.

Rain chances increase Thursday morning for areas west of Highway 63, with more showers and thunderstorms developing by afternoon in Mid-Missouri. This will help stabilize the atmosphere, and reduce instability. There will be a great amount of wind shear available (increasing winds with height) as well as a strengthening low level jet to aid in strong storm development into the late afternoon and evening Thursday.

Mid-Missouri does experience severe weather during the month of November. On November 5th of 2005, a severe weather event brought 94 hail reports and 172 wind reports to the Midwest. Mid-Missouri saw 27 of these large hail reports and 3 high winds reports including an 80 mph wind measured in Boone County.
