One charged in connection to Columbia shooting that damaged duplex

Police arrested Damitries L. Denny, 21, Wednesday night in connection to a Columbia shooting.

Police responded to a shots fired incident in a north Columbia neighborhood around 8 p.m. Monday.

ABC 17 was at the scene in the 2900 block of Leeway Drive. Police officers taped off a duplex on the street. Gunfire from multiple shots damaged the duplex.

Police took one person away in handcuffs and searched a car that was parked on the street.

Leeway Drive was blocked off on both sides and there was a heavy police presence.

Court documents stated a victim told police he was visiting his uncle who lives in the apartment complex when he was confronted by someone who wanted to fight.

The victim said him and the man got into a verbal argument, then the man left.

A short time later, the man returned with two others who started to fire shots at him. In fear, the victim fired back.

One of the men who fired shots at the victim identified one of his accomplices as Damitries Denny, who allegedly was the one who initially fired shots at the victim.

Court documents said other witnesses confirmed that Denny was the first one to fire shots during the confrontation.

Denny is charged with armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
