Fire causes major damage at Lincoln University
ABC 17 News confirmed emergency responders are on the scene of a fire at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
Police blocked the road from 1110 Chestnut Street near Lincoln U.’s stadium, all the way to Stadium Boulevard.
The fire reportedly broke out at the Dickinson Research Center at 1219 Chestnut.
University Relations Director Misty Young told ABC 17 there were about 5-10 people inside the building at the time, and all made it out safely.
University officials said they were actually planning to add onto the building.
JCFD Division Chief Jason Turner said the fire started near the back of the building on a loading dock.
“People over at Jefferson City High School saw flames. At about the same time people in the building realized the fire was inside as well,” said Young.
Turner said the heat was a big challenge for fire crews.
“Especially with all the gear they’re wearing inside with the heated conditions, it does drag them down really quick,” said Turner.
One firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for an unknown condition, but was released by late afternoon.
As of Thursday afternoon, it appears the fire was accidental, and may have been caused by an electrical malfunction.
