Storm leaves damage in Randolph Co.

ABC 17 News confirmed there is storm damage in Clifton Hill after strong storms moved through Randolph County at around 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Clifton Hill is about 13 miles west of Moberly on Highway 24.

Highway Patrol Troop B troopers reported a brief tornado touching down near Clifton Hill at around 3:08 p.m.

Troopers also reported trees and power lines down in the area.

ABC 17 News confirmed with Randolph County Sheriff Mark Nichols there was some structural damage to buildings, a few trees blocking roads, and power lines down in Clifton Hill.

A viewer reported to ABC 17 his guest house received major damage, and trailer destroyed on Holman Street.

“It came out of the sky right down the road here, when we got home, we found a trees laying down,” Clifton Hill resident Darrell Manroe said. “Our guest house basically got picked up off the ground and slammed. It moved 10 feet. “

Another resident said she moved everyone in her home to a safe location when she saw the cloud.

“I got up to go shut the living room window because the wind had picked up and I proceeded to tell everybody to go to our safe spot because I actually seen the rotation,” April Trusty said. “It was a definite funnel.”

There was an area of weak rotation spotted on ABC 17 Stormtrack Doppler Radar, but no tornado or severe thunderstorm warning was issued with that storm. The storm formed in an area with favorable low-level turning of the winds, and near a warm front that provided lift for the storm to develop.

Damage in the area observed by ABC 17 looked sporadic, and in a narrow area, consistent with a possible tornado.

The National Weather Service in Kansas City issues warnings for Randolph County, and will make the official decision if the damage was caused by strong winds or a tornado.
