Lake area police warn of ATM tampering

Police near the Lake of the Ozarks are warning consumers of scammers trying to steal personal information from ATM machines.

Central Bank of the Lake of the Ozarks Fraud Department said they have received reports that ATMs in Kansas City and Springfield were compromised by scam artists placing a device on top of the card reader.

The device is disguised to look like part of the ATM card reader, but is a little bigger than the card reader and is stuck to the outside of it.

They also are placing a flat piece on the front of the ATM with a small camera inside so PIN numbers can be recorded.

Anyone using the ATM should tug on the card reader and flat piece, and if they become loose or break off, call police immediately.
