Restaurant owner in JC sends resources to Nepal

Dr. Devi States has yet to hear from his family in Nepal. He owns Everest Cafe in Jefferson City and moved from Nepal to the U.S. several years ago.

After the earthquake hit last week in Nepal, he’s been unable get in contact with his family, but remains hopeful they are still alive.

Dr. States and his wife Connie own Everest Cafe and said all they can do is wait for a phone call and try and get on with everyday life.

“I call and no answer. It’s very sad and very emotional not knowing what happened,” said Dr. States.

His wife, Connie, said she wonders if her family is alive and said these are just some of the thoughts running through their minds on a daily basis.

Dr. States moved from Nepal to America several years back and at one point he was homeless. He told ABC 17 the earthquake has brought back flashbacks to that time.

Both States and his wife said they are so upset they can’t eat or sleep.

“I am working everyday, but in my mind it’s somewhere else. I’m thinking about what’s going on back there,” said Connie States.

The States family started a foundation called the Himalayan Family Healthcare Project in 2009. Each year they travel to Nepal with doctors and supplies.

When they learned of the earthquake hit they sent a doctor to Nepal to assess the damage.

“He is basically confused right now. There is just so much need,” said Dr. States.

He said once the doctor comes back from Nepal they have a better understanding of what they need to bring them.

Dr. States said for anyone who can donate or help out with anything, they should first look into the charity they are donating to because there are a lot of scams going around taking advantage of generous people.
