CPS to vote on elementary school boundaries Monday

A major vote is on the horizon for new boundary lines with Columbia Public Schools on Monday.

ABC 17 talked with School Board Vice President James Whitt on ABC 17 News at 9:00 a.m.

Whitt said leaders had a few questions for the committee during their last work session.

The changes should remove trailers, but they aren’t expected to cut class sizes.

Whitt knows the switch can be tough no matter what, but they’re trying to make it as easy as possible.

“That can not be avoided and we understand that, and we understand the trauma that it’s going to send certain families through, because once you make a boundary change, a boundary change that may be good for one set of parents, may wind up being bad for another set of parents, so we try to minimize that as much as possible.”

More than 500 students are expected to attend the new elementary school in southwest Columbia.

Six schools will be impacted, including Rock Bridge, Mill Creek, Russell, Paxton Keeley, Grant, and Fairview.
