Jefferson City Police prepare for St. Patrick’s Day weekend
Jefferson City Police are gearing up for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend to curb drunk driving.
Police said they’ve never had a major problem with DWI offenses, but they do get a few arrests before the holiday.
However, with the warmer temperatures they’re expecting larger crowds this year, which could mean more people making bad decisions to drive drunk.
“This weekend and next Saturday night we’ll have saturation patrols,” said Sgt. Steve Dappen with JCPD.
Those extra officers will be out specifically working traffic and looking for DWI offenders.
Dappen said his officers will be looking for suspicious drivers, but do not have any specific checkpoints planned.
Dappen said the department wants everyone to have a good time, but to use good judgement.
“We encourage folks to use a sober chauffeur program where they get a free ticket from the bar for a free cab ride home. If folks can’t wait or can arrange a cab ride ahead of time, please do so,” said Dappen.
ABC 17 News did talk to Allen and Marilee Tatman at Paddy Malone’s, who said they’re expecting a very large crowd Saturday after the parade.
They also have a countdown to St. Patrick’s Day party on Monday.
Police are also asking the public to call 911 if you see erratic driving.
