Columbia unveils improvement plan for busy intersection

A busy intersection in Columbia is getting a major facelift. Columbia city officials said they are improving the Stadium and Old 63 intersection.

City officials unveiled the plan for the intersection at an open house Tuesday night.

The project includes extra left turning lanes for drivers northbound to westbound and a right turning lane for westbound to northbound traffic. Crosswalks will be added to the intersection and the design also calls for beautification of the area.

The proposed project will cost around $1.28 million. Columbia would pick up 50 percent and the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will cover the other half.

Columbia’s portion of the construction bill will be paid with the Capital Improvement Sales Tax voters approved in 2005.

Construction of the project is slated to begin in 2016.
