Jefferson City leaders review trash services
Leaders in Jefferson City are in the middle of reviewing their trash services. Monday night, the city council heard from several owners who want their own provider. ABC 17 News sat down with 3rd Ward councilman Ken Hussey Tuesday morning.
For the last 7 years, Republic has handled trash for people’s homes and businesses. The same company owns the city’s landfill.
However, the city council is writing up a new request for trash services, which details what the city needs.
They’re getting ready to hear proposals from different companies who want to provide them. That is expected to start in late April or early May. Until then, council members said they won’t know what’s available.
“You never know until you get the bids back. Our hope is to get multiple vendors that have interest. We are exploring a couple of different options. Currently it’s residential and commercial, all bundled together into one provider. We’ve heard from the business community about breaking off the commercial and letting that be open market for the businesses to decide who their provider is, so that could change rates as well, but you never know until you get the bids back,” said Hussey.
The council expects to have a decision on providers by the middle or end of summer, but they emphasized things could always change between now and then.
