Sturgeon Board of Aldermen votes to keep police chief
A police chief in northern Boone County gets to keep his job after a week on edge.
The Sturgeon Board of Aldermen voted unamimously Thursday night to keep Chief Greg Halderman in his
position.
The decision comes after more than a week of uncertainty after allegations of the chief pointing an unloaded gun at
someone.
Last week, ABC 17 News was there when the board planned to close the meeting to talk about asking the chief to resign.
However, dozens of people in Sturgeon came to the meeting and demanded answers why they wanted the chief to step down.
On Monday, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department investigated that claim.
A city utility worker made the complaint saying the chief pointed a gun in his face.
Chief Halderman said in that report he was testing the grip on a gun and unloaded it beforehand.
Then he accidentally pointed it at the worker when he entered the room.
Chief Halderman told ABC 17 News he’s thankful for those who supported him, and not just this past week.
“I’m appreciative and humbled by all the support of the citizens in this community since I was a transplant here two and a half years ago.
And I’m just honored they’ve supported me as I’ve tried to support them in my job.”
Only three members of the Board of Aldermen voted on this. Mayor Gene Kelly told ABC 17 News James Woods, a newly appointed member, resigned this past week.
