Shots fired during domestic disturbance in Jefferson City

A Jefferson City man was arrested early Wednesday after a domestic disturbance involving a gun. At around 11 p.m. police responded to the disturbance call at the Broadmoor apartments on Ellis Boulevard.

According to police, Heriberto Martinez got into an argument with his girlfriend, during which he fired a gun and threatened to kill himself. The girlfriend was not hurt, but some bullets went into adjacent apartments, and in one case a person was nearly hit. Martinez, 34, also made several statements indicating a desire that police kill him.

When police got to the scene, Martinez was in the parking lot, and according to officers refused to drop his gun. Martinez also yelled at officers to shoot him. The city’s S.W.A.T. team and Crisis Negotiations Team also responded to the disturbance, and after about 90 minutes Martinez surrendered without incident.

Martinez was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, felonious restraint, and child endangerment.
