Police disarm suspicious package in Holts Summit bomb scare

The scene has been cleared in Holts Summit after a suspicious package prompted a call to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s bomb diposal unit.

A Holts Summit police sergeant told ABC 17 about 12:20 this afternoon that the highway patrol had rendered the package safe and that this was not a hoax.

Police responded around 10:30 this morning when a woman found the package in her mailbox at her home on Venus Street in the Callaway County city.

Officials closed the street for a little more than two hours and asked the resident of the home to move to the basement while they worked with the device.

Holts Summit police say it looks like the resident was not specifically targeted, but targeted randomly. Police say the woman living in the home received no threats prior to finding the explosive. There are no suspects at this time and the investigation was continuing.

Police ask residents to contact authorities or dial 911 if they find anything suspicious in their mailbox or notice any suspicious activity. They ask that residents do not handle or remove any suspicious items.
