Man arrested for fatally shooting teenager

Columbia police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of Deante Smith on Sunday. Stone Midgyett, 19, was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter for the shooting on White River Drive.

According to investigators, associates of Midgyett and Smith got into a fight. As Smith tried to leave, some of Midgyett’s people ran at him.

At that point, Smith apparently turned and started shooting at his pursuers, and Midgyett says he shot more than a dozen times back at Smith.

Smith, 17, was wounded, and died later at a hospital. One other person was injured, though the injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
