Columbia Police chief talks about latest shooting arrest

A Columbia man was arrested Tuesday morning for the shooting death of 17-year-old Deante Smith on Sunday.

19-year-old Stone Midgyett is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Smith’s death.

It all started with a fight between a group the victim was in and Midgyett.

Midgyett said Smith fired as he ran and then he shot back.

Smith died and another was injured, making this the first deadly shooting in Columbia for the new year.

Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton sat down with ABC 17 News Tuesday morning, and said gang activity cannot be ruled out.
