Hundreds hitting the road for the holidays

As the holidays get underway, many are hitting the road in Mid-Missouri.

The Missouri Highway Patrol starts their Christmas counting period Wednesday night, lasting through Sunday night.

Last year during that period there were more than 200 crashes, one fatal, in Missouri.

About 33% of Americans are expected to travel this year, most of them by car.

AAA officials said that could be due to low gas prices.

“People feel a little bit better about their own personal situation. The disposable income category of the family budget is often improved and consequently the budget, category that is normally tapped for travel and they’re tapping it this year,” said Mike Wright, a Public Affairs representative with AAA.
