Columbia police investigating bank robbery

Columbia police responded to a bank robbery in the northeast part of the city just before closing time around 5 p.m. Monday.

Officers were called to the Boone County National Bank at 1916 Paris Road near Clark Lane. An ABC 17 reporter said several detectives were working the area.

Officials confirmed the suspect was a white man wearing light-colored clothing, sunglasses and a baseball hat. He escaped on foot.

Public information officers with the police department at the scene could not confirm if he was armed.

No one was injured.

Mary Wilkerson, the Senior Vice President of Marketing at Boone County National Bank, said although it’s an unfortunate event, she’s proud of her employees.

“Our folks followed protocol,” she said. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do and everybody is fine, so that’s really the most important thing.”

Wilkerson told ABC 17 News she believes the robber will be caught because of all the security measures they have in place.

“We have really, really stringent security,” she said. “It’s incredibly stupid to rob a bank. I mean, we have video, we have surfaces that are easy to fingerprint. It’s incredibly foolish to rob a bank.”

Right now, police don’t have any other information to release.

Anyone with information or who may have seen anything suspicious around the time of the robbery is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.
