Better Business Bureau hosts annual shredding event in Columbia

The mid-Missouri Better Business Bureau hosted “Shred Day” in the Lucky’s Market parking lot in Columbia Saturday.

The event happens once a year and is sponsored by the Missouri Attorney General.

It’s an opportunity for consumers and businesses to drop off any sensitive documents they want to dispose of for free, including papers with social security numbers, tax returns, bank statements and old IDs.

Mike Harrison with the Better Business Bureau said shredding the documents containing personal information stops it from getting into the wrong hands.

“It’s just a great opportunity for folks to come out and shred that information for peace of mind, but also to prevent identity theft,” Harrison said.

The Better Business Bureau said this year’s event had a successful turnout. At least 75 people dropped off sensitive documents to be shredded.
