One person injured in Jefferson City shooting

Jefferson City Police are looking into several leads after a shooting sent one man to the hospital Tuesday night.

Just after 9:00, police were called for shots fired on Elizabeth Street in the central part of the city.

Today we talked to the victim’s wife. She said she was also threatened by the gunmen. She said her two children were home when the gunmen stormed in.

Jefferson City Police said they were first called to Elizabeth Street around 7:45 Tuesday night, but when they arrived in the neighborhood several people ran.

Capt. Doug Shoemaker, Jefferson City Police Department: “When we got there they all scattered, ran. We had absolutely no cooperation. No help from anybody. There were no calls of shots being fired at that disturbance. It just came out as a fight or some sort of problem between some people there. But nobody wanted to cooperate. Nobody wanted to help so there was really nothing to that. But it’s believed that most likely that disturbance has some play in the later disturbance that ended up in the shots being fired.”

Then around 9:00, police said multiple people called 911 for hearing shots fired on the same street.

Police went back and found a 24-year-old man had been shot in the leg. They also found several shell casings. At least one of the buildings was hit with bullets, but police said no one else was injured.

The victim’s wife said the conflict started when a woman living in the complex accused a man of stealing from her apartment.

She said about eight men came to the apartment and were attacking the man who was accused of stealing right in front of her home. She said when her husband stepped up for him, the group turned on him, then came into their home and put a gun up to her face. She said they shot her husband; the bullet went through one leg and grazed the other.

Police arrested one man, 20-year-old Nathan Tilson for pulling a gun during the first disturbance. And police said they are looking for more suspects.

Shoemaker: “We’re actively looking and following up on what I would say is a significant number of leads to that end.”

The man’s injuries were not serious and he was released from the hospital a short time later.

Tilson is currently in the Cole County Jail. Charges have not yet been filed.
