School put on modified lockdown in Columbia

District officials said Oakland Middle School near Oakland Gravel and Blue Ridge roads in north Columbia was placed on a modified lockdown Wednesday as police looked for a suspected car thief in the area.

ABC 17 News confirmed with police a car was reported stolen after 6:30 a.m. from Granite Creek Drive, off Route E just north of the Columbia Mall. Officers got a call from On-Star around 8:45 a.m. about the stolen vehicle that was seven miles away near Smiley Lane and Oakland Gravel Road. Police found it just west of Oakland Gravel Road. So far, no one has been taken into custody.

The district said a modified lockdown means that no on can leave or enter. The alert was lifted after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
